Sold Post - Lilly Berns
After reading the first third of the book Sold by Patricia McCormick, I have not figured out exactly where this story takes place. The author mentions seeing the Himalayas (pg. 9), she gives us details about the weather, and when she is leaving to go to the city, she talks about walking past nine villages (pg. 63), and she goes from walking, to riding in a car, to riding in a bus. All of these features are different from each other, making it hard to know where the city is, and what Village Lakshmi come from. However, according to Patricia McCormick, she told readers on her website, that she traveled to India and Nepal, to get insights on sex slaves. She interviewed women from the Calcutta's red-light district, who have also been rescued from the sex slavery. This information let me know that the story takes place in Nepal and India, where Lakshmi goes from a small village, to a big city. Since the City also has buses and cars, I have figured out that this story takes place not so long ago, making my prediction of this story, that it will be devastating to see where sex slavery is today.
