I was curious about why prostitution rates are so high in India?  Their are more than 3 million sex worker in India  with 35.47 percent of them entering the trade before the age of 18 years.The number of prostitutes rose by 50% between 1997 and 2004.  According to childprostitution.com their is more prostitution in India because  children are cheaper to acquire and traffic than adults and parts in India are very poor and use that as a way to get money its really sad that some children have to endure the pain of being forced into sex trafficking.  The number of children who work in prostitution is the  largest in India. This is so astounding, i cant imagine having to give my virginity to a complete stranger. Their are 42 million prostitutes in the world, that number is sky high  is very unbelievable. In the book i feel bad for Lakshmi because she was walking into a situation  blindly. page "109 "each morning and evening mumtaz comes and beats me with a leather strap, and locks the door behind her" these people have no sympathy or care for an child or women. this is completely in human for someone not to care or show any interest that these women are trapped.
  I was wondering if Ama knew about this and is that why she was so upset? I feel ama had some clue to this and knew that her husband was not just selling her to a rich family, at this point i am unsure if she know or didn't. The first man that they had tried to set her up with she ran and from the start and as it kept going on she realize that something wasn't right and she wasn't going to be able just to leave  with out sacrificing and suffering.
Prostitution in India is legal according to gangothri.org There are many criminal offences and laws  that associate with prostitution for example taking away people for prostitution is a minimum of three years and a sex worker can legally practice her profession inside a house but cannot take clients from the street. This interest me more why do some women choose to sell their body, and how most of them get out of situations like the one Lakshmi is in and the more i read the more emotional i get just thinking of how scary this must be for all child prostitutes.
