Sold
First blog
- Amy Kohlbrenner
I am reading the books Sold and I can't help but compare her life to mine. Her stepfather gambles away most of the money that they're supposed to pay to the landlord, She is promised to married the boy with a sleepy cats eye, and last of all She brushes her teeth with a twig. I realize that later on in the book these are the least of her worries but still they are making me realize that I should be more thankful of what I have.
Also her real father died. So now she has a stepfather. He has one arm oils his hair back wears a vest and a wrist watch that doesn't work.
In their country men are very sexist towards woman at one point they say that "a girl is like a goat good as long as she gives you milk and butter but not worth crying over when it's time to make stew."
On page 14 she talks about getting her "first blood." And when she got her first blood she had to stay out of sight for seven days not even the sun can see her. Because they believe that when you have your first blood you are unpure. After she got her first blood her life basically changed she was not allowed to be in the same room as a man or look a man in the eye unless he was in her family. And now that she is a woman she is going to get married in a year to the boy with the sleepy cats eye. It's strange how in different countries People will react and acted differently for example if I missed a week of school and came back and people asked me where or what I was doing and I told them I was locked in a goat shed for seven days because I had my first blood they would think that me and my family are crazy but in this country it is a total normal and expected thing to do.
I really liked your analysis on the first blood. I was interested in this part as well. I thought it was interesting when Ama was tell Lakshmi all about what she will have to do when she is married and promised to a man. Good job.
ReplyDeleteHi Amy and Sophie,
ReplyDeleteYou have both done well on #1 of the Directions for Posting, which is being curious and talking about what sparked your curiosity in the book. Now you need to do some further research, cite your source, describe your findings (#2, #3). And when you comment, you need to ADD some more research to their research.
(really late) Amy, I love how you started out this blog with a comparison, because you are right! Through this entire book i have realized just how privileged we are, growing up in Marin with everything just handed to us. Our cultures and way of living are very different from other people around the world, and i feel that just by reading the book my knowledge has broadened. I also loved your ending and how you showed us just how crazy the first blood action is. Great job, i really enjoyed this post.
