After reading the first 89 pages of Gold, by Patricia McCormick, I am growing more and more curious as to what time the book is based in. In the book, it talks about different cities and villages. The village that is described to be Lakshmi's home sounds traditional and off the grid so it is hard to tell by this what time the book is set in. On page 67, it is now known that Lakshmi is on a bus, traveling through various cities with trucks and street vendors. This implies that the time must be more recent than anything. Not too much later, they are passing through india and seeing advertisements with models on them. By this information, my guess would be that the book is based more recently maybe in the 1990's or possibly even the 2000's.

I too was wondering what time period this took place in. Because the girls watch Television, and because American men were coming in to try and rescue these girls who have been mistreated, I would similarly infer that the book is somewhat recent. This made me thoroughly consider the idea that sex trafficking continues to be a major issue in Modern day India. I found from an article launched in 2013 from the New York Times, that stated that sex trade in India is estimated to be a 27 million person industry. Recently a law was passed, banning sex trade, however hardly any further actions were done to end this horror. It is common to traffic girls from Nepal, and some Indian's are taken to the coast of Asia. Poverty and ignorance is a major issue and so, although the law is a step in the right direction, education and more enforcement must be more prominent.
