Something that really interested me was the fact that prostitution is legal in India's Red Light Districts yet running a brothel is illegal. This thought struck me while I was researching prostitution laws in India to get a little more background information about the book. I already knew that prostitution was legal but thought that brothels were as well. I also wondered about if prostitution was legal in Nepal, Lakshmi's native country. It is obvious that most of the girls in the brothel are there unwillingly, yet they are forced to stay, whether they drug you or beat you or not. They could have thrown her out into the street but instead they drug her and force her to have sex (p. 119). Is drugging the prostitutes legal? And how old do these girls have to be? If so, thats pretty rough..
According to Answers.com, India allows prostitution to happen In India as long as there isn't public solicitation of sex workers. Indian laws forbid anyone to take part in a prostitution ring, pimping or running brothels. And some facts I found about Nepal's prostitution laws, I found on Wikipedia. It said that sold sex in Nepal is neither legal nor illegal. There are thousands of sex workers, but the law isn't really enforced. Most prostitution happens in brothels or in "massage parlors". Underage prostitution in India is a huge problem and is also a problem in Nepal. It is also illegal to drug prostitutes, according to Wikipedia.
I thought the same thing Skyler! So I looked it up and according to ProCon.org "Prostitution is not specifically addressed in the law. However, many officials interpreted "crimes against decency/morality" to apply to prostitution. Prostitution was widespread and largely tolerated, despite its contradiction with popular societal and religious norms." I feel like more should be done to help girls like Lakshmi get out of this horrible life
