Second Post
Mind Control is a powerful thing to Lakshmi. She works hard to really try to pretend that she is in a different situation. She tries to trick her mind into thinking that she is back at home with her family and friends. She especially has to do this when the costumers are with her. She uses mind control to forget her surroundings. Lakshmi says that, "But if you are lucky, or if you work hard at it, you hear nothing." (127) It breaks my heart to think that this young girl has to pretend everyday of her life that she is okay. She doesn't have a safe place in the happiness house because the men come into her room and Mumtaz is out in the halls always a threat to Lakshmi. Lakshmi uses mind control on herself to make her horrible life a little less horrible.

I agree Chloe, this so-called "Happiness House" is one of the most terrible, evil things I can imagine. Since it is so awful, Lakshmi must find as many ways as possible to pretend that everything is alright, using a form of mind control. One way that she attempts this is by smelling her old clothes and pretending she is back at home. On page 153, she says, "I have been frugal with myself, not daring to unwrap the bundle more than once a day, for fear that it would lose its magic."
