first blog : Sofia Lundberg

There where a lot of interesting and different ways of Lakshmis culture that was good to know be a part of the rest of the story and see where she is coming from. Its very interesting to get the background of her life before we see her go into this world she not only is extremely scary and horrible but so different in every way. She was used to barley having enough water and food to get buy and now not only had her life changed because of her knew "job" but because she was actually eating ands drinking more than she usually would. Like when she wasn't going to "give herself" to these men and Mumtaz said she was going to starve her. This didn't seem to affect Lakshmi very much since she was so used to not eating for days on end. She says "And she says that she will starve me until I submit. What she does not realize is that I already know hunger."She also states "After five days of no food and water I don't even dream". The fact that she is taking this hunger strike so calmly is uncanny and very rare. Most people in this society could do half of what she has stood up for. She is so brave and knows how to do the best she can to try to help herself get out of this dreadful situation.

  1. I completely agree Sofia. She is being forced into this situation that she was not prepared for and because of how harsh the conditions she used to live in, even the incentivising torture is something she had experienced before. The section in the reading when she was given new, revealing clothes and was being given from person to person from town to town showed how she did not know what she was getting into. ABC reports that there are millions of child slaves in india and many many of those are sex slaves. This suggests that many other girls like Lakshmi that thought they would be working as a maid or something similar and the situation quickly flips on them and they are put in a situation like this.

  2. I completely agree both Sofia and Rick. The trade that they force these prostitutes into is unbelievable, and coming from such a naive and rough background, Lakshimi must be brave and use the skills she has learned from the past. Living in her old town she picked up common skills needed to survive, and now put into such a harsh and rash business it was inspiring how she used her strength and defiance to try to stop it. It is disgraceful that this is a business in the least, but after drugging her, forcing her, and bribing her I was disgusted. I read online that 92% of prostitutes are not consensual and are bribed or drugged just like Lakshimi. Imagine all of those women and girls and perhaps males being forced into such a disturbing act. Sexual intercourse should be a special thing, it is not right to force young, naive girls like Lakshimi into such a business.
