2nd Sold Blog Post- Prostitution in India- Carly Silva

I was interested about the prostitution house that Lakshmi goes to. Are they common in India? Do girls that young really work there?
While researching about prostitution in India, I came across some interesting things. 70% of prostitutes are forced to go into that line of work, and among that number, 20% are children. Poverty and unemployment are some of the reasons that women and children are forced into becoming sex workers. Lakshmi was both lured into the city by her "auntie" but she was also thrust into it by her own family. In reality, children are not lured into it, they are forced to participate in it.
Prostitution is very common in India. In 2007, it was reported there were around 3 million sex workers in India! Among those 3 million, 35% of those women joined the work before the age of 18. There are around 1.2 million child prostitutes.
Although prostitution is illegal in India, it remains a huge issue. Hopefully in the future, women and children will not be forced into being sex workers against their will.

  1. I looked up the exact same thing, i also came across something interesting prostitution is legal in India while they have laws that associate with prostitution and they believe selling one sexual services as prostitution so there for they do not criminalize it. But that's just in India their are 42 million prostitutes in the world. But India is of the highest prostitution in Kamathipura, one of the country's poorest districts and also its largest red light district, home to more than 60,000 sex workers and is soon to spread 3 million people are sex worker that travel place to place. How many prostitutes are their in china altogether? but this was great loved it!
